Maitea is a wonderfully unpretentious Basque tavern where the focus is firmly on excellent food, superb wine and having a good time. The pintxos, outstanding chuletón and extraordinary wine list make it feel like a little piece of San Sebastián in Barcelona.
This is probably not where we would go for a romantic date, but it is exactly where we would go for great food, great wine and a fun evening. The pintxos are top-notch and genuinely make you feel as if you were in San Sebastián. The chuletón is one of the best we have had in Barcelona: tender, juicy and very reasonably priced. What really sets Maitea apart, however, is the extraordinary wine list, with an impressive selection of Old World treasures alongside some New World wines at remarkably fair prices. The Champagne section alone is eye-opening and makes Maitea one of the most exciting places in the city for wine lovers.
